W4 The New England Aquarium is located on Central Wharf. This site was acquired from the Boston Redevelopment Authority in 1965 and was opened to the public in June, 1969. In the giant ocean tank are the aquarium's largest saltwater animals, including turtles, sharks, stingrays, moral eels, stripers and species of angelfish, parrotfish, and porcupine fish. The fresh water tray has the inhabitants of semitropical swamps, including toads, frogs, various lizards and turtles, wading birds, cape, gar, Mississippi catfish and sturgeons. A Chirldrent's aquarium contains plants and animals found in tide pools. Youngsters may pick up living starfish, crabs and sea urchins.-Massachusetts: A Guide to the Pilgrim State 1971
89. The Boston Aquarium (open 10-5 daily), corner of Farragut Rd., is a low stucco building with octagonal, red-tiled tower and a fish weathervane.-Massachusetts: a guide to its places and people 1937 p. 168

The Massachusetts AGS book was revised in 1971 to bring it up to date. In that light the New England Aquarium documented here was included as the South Boston Aquarium at Marine Park from the 1937 edition closed its doors in the 1950's. On our visit to the new aquarium we were impressed by the huge tank in the center of the building that stretches four stories. We saw cleaning of the penguin area and feeding of the seals in the outdoor section. It may have been a bit overpriced for what you get but it is Boston.
