"La iglesia arciprestal de San Mateo Apóstol, situada en la Plaza de la Iglesia de la localidad de San Mateo (provincia de Castellón, España), es un templo del siglo xiii con intervenciones de los siglos xv, xvii y xviii.
El primer punto a tener en cuenta es la portada románica. Junto con el primer tramo de nave, es el único resto que queda de la primitiva iglesia del tipo llamado gótico valenciano "de reconquista" que se construyó bajo el dominio de la orden del Hospital entre 1237 a 1257.
Esta portada románica constituye una de las principales muestras de arquitectura románica la Comunidad Valenciana.
El cuerpo principal de la iglesia lo constituye la nave de estilo gótico valenciano. Fue construida entre 1350 y 1360 bajo el dominio de la Orden de Montesa. Se sobrepuso a la primitiva nave románica de la que se servía de andamio en el momento de la construcción y que se iba derruyendo tal como se iba superando. La construcción de la nave gótica no se finalizó, razón por la que todavía subsiste la portada románica como resto de la primitiva iglesia románica enclavada dentro de la construcción gótica. La portada lateral de estilo gótico primitivo posee preciosas escenas esculpidas en los capiteles. La torre campanario es octogonal de una altura de 32 metros.
La iglesia es de nave única correspondiendo el primer tramo a la nave románica y el resto a la nave gótica.
Existen capillas laterales, siendo las más importantes las situadas a la derecha o lado de la Epístola. La primera que encontramos es del siglo xvii y actualmente alberga la imagen de la patrona de nuestra población, la Virgen de los Ángeles. La segunda fue construida hacia 1790 para albergar las reliquias de un mártir que fueron encontradas en las catacumbas de Santa Priscila. Estos restos están expuestos en la urna situada en el brazo opuesto del crucero. Se trata de la momia de un mártir anónimo al que se llamó San Clemente en honor del Papa de la época.
Sacristía
A la derecha del ábside poligonal se encuentra la sacristía. Conviene observar si está abierta porque indica la presencia del capellán que les facilitará el acceso al Museo Arciprestal, donde podrán admirar interesantísimas piezas de culto, destacando las piezas de orfebrería gótica realizadas por orfebres de Sant Mateu. La pieza principal es una cruz procesional de plata dorada con esmaltes de finales del siglo xiv, que fue sufragada por la familia Comí, familia de mercaderes laneros. Otra pieza a destacar es el cáliz del Papa Luna de principios del siglo xv".

"The archpriest church of San Mateo Apóstol, located in the Plaza de la Iglesia in the town of San Mateo (province of Castellón, Spain), is a temple from the 13th century with interventions from the 15th, 17th and 18th centuries.
The first point to take into account is the Romanesque façade. Together with the first section of the nave, it is the only remains of the primitive church of the type called Valencian Gothic "reconquista" that was built under the rule of the order of the Hospital between 1237 to 1257.
This Romanesque façade constitutes one of the main examples of Romanesque architecture in the Valencian Community.
The main body of the church is the Valencian Gothic style nave. It was built between 1350 and 1360 under the rule of the Order of Montesa. It was superimposed on the primitive Romanesque nave which was used as scaffolding at the time of construction and which was demolished as it was overcome. The construction of the Gothic nave was not completed, which is why the Romanesque façade still exists as a remainder of the primitive Romanesque church located within the Gothic construction. The lateral doorway in primitive Gothic style has beautiful scenes sculpted on the capitals. The bell tower is octagonal with a height of 32 meters.
The church has a single nave, the first section corresponding to the Romanesque nave and the rest to the Gothic nave.
There are side chapels, the most important being those located to the right or side of the Epistle. The first one we found is from the 17th century and currently houses the image of the patron saint of our town, the Virgin of the Angels. The second was built around 1790 to house the relics of a martyr that were found in the catacombs of Saint Priscilla. These remains are displayed in the urn located on the opposite arm of the transept. It is the mummy of an anonymous martyr who was called San Clemente in honor of the Pope of the time.
Sacristy
To the right of the polygonal apse is the sacristy. It is worth checking if it is open because it indicates the presence of the chaplain who will facilitate access to the Archpriest Museum, where you can admire very interesting pieces of worship, highlighting the pieces of Gothic goldsmithing made by goldsmiths from Sant Mateu. The main piece is a processional cross of gilded silver with enamel from the end of the 14th century, which was paid for by the Comí family, a family of wool merchants. Another piece to highlight is the Papa Luna chalice from the early 15th century."
