The historic Dominican convent of Forcall, from the 17th century, suffered a spectacular collapse early yesterday morning without causing any personal injury. A part of the historic building, which is part of the cultural heritage route of the Valencian Community, collapsed at 2:15 a.m.

The event caused a stir among the neighbors. “I was sleeping and the scare was very strong, I didn't know what was happening. I even thought that it was a tornado,” said Paco Sorribes, who runs a bakery where he has his house, in front of the convent.

Due to the landslide, the electricity to about 15 neighboring homes was cut off and there was no option to knead bread in this oven. “We got up to work and we couldn't because we didn't have electricity, and he didn't return until late in the morning,” explained Montse Pascual, an employee at Paco's business.

Electra del Maestrazgo worked from the first hour to try to fix this situation. “The underground line and the one that was installed on the same façade have broken, so we have had to find a provisional solution to return light to the damaged houses,” explained electrician José Ramón Guarch.

The convent had had structural deficiencies for years and no one lived there. Between the 50s and 80s it became a farm. “We could think that this would happen because it had been bad for years, it had a lot of humidity problems,” Sorribes told this newspaper.

Currently, it was owned by a company that planned the creation of a luxury hotel in 2006. There was even a guided tour among the neighbors to show what they wanted to do in this building. The project was stopped due to the current negative economic situation.

From the Forcall City Council, yesterday a report of the damages was made by the surveyor to take the appropriate measures.

municipal report // The mayor of the municipality, Santiago Pérez, lamented “the property damage of the collapse although, fortunately, no personal injuries have been reported.” The first mayor explained that he "contacted Heritage to explain the situation" and they will send them "the report of what has happened to study the actions to be taken."

The owners assured that they will remove the debris and reinforce the part of the property that has not collapsed.
