[ENG] "The Burgerweeshuis located between the Kalverstraat, the Begijnhof, the Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal and the Sint Luciënsteeg came into use in 1580, when the orphans moved into the former Sint Luciënklooster. In order to make the building on the Kalverstraat side recognizable as an orphanage, a large gate was made. The sculptor Joost Janszoon Bilhamer (1541-1590) was commissioned to do this. He also created a relief above the gate. The text above the gate, attributed to Joost van den Vondel, reads: We grow fast in number and burden. Our second Father's complaint/Ay do not continue through this gate, Or help to carry a little. The gate is still a prominent point in the famous shopping street."

[NED] Het Burgerweeshuis gelegen tussen de Kalverstraat, het Begijnhof, de Nieuwezijds Voorburgwal en de Sint Luciënsteeg kwam in 1580 in gebruik, toen de wezen het voormalig Sint Luciënklooster betrokken. Om het gebouw aan de Kalverstraatzijde herkenbaar te maken als weeshuis werd een grote poort gemaakt. De beeldhouwer Joost Janszoon Bilhamer (1541-1590) kreeg hiervoor de opdracht. Hij bracht ook een reliëf boven de poort aan. De tekst boven de poort, toegeschreven aan Joost van den Vondel luidt: Wy Groeien vast in tal en last. Ons tweede Vaders klagen/Ay ga niet voort door dese poort, Of helpt een luttel dragen. De poort is nog steeds een markant punt in de beroemde winkelstraat.
