"A solar bench (also known as a smart bench) is a bench or piece of street furniture in a public space where you can sit, charge your cell phone battery and surf the Internet for free. Cell phones can be charged either via USB cable or contactless via induction. Internet access is provided via a WLAN hotspot. Environmental data such as temperature and humidity can also be collected and the battery charge status and utilization can be displayed. The electricity required is generated by photovoltaics and stored in batteries integrated into the bench. The benches can help to raise awareness of climate protection.

There are also designs in which the photovoltaic modules are not located in the seat but above it in the shape of a roof. The first models of solar benches appeared in Boston in 2014. The benches are now becoming increasingly widespread in Germany, including in Stuttgart, Herne, Munich, Gardelegen, Stendal and the Hanover region. The installations are often sponsored by electricity supply companies and banks. Stadtwerke Stuttgart, for example, has installed 19 solar benches in cooperation with BW Bank."
