This life-sized bronze statue of Egill Gr. Thorarensen is near the center of town, just southeast of the traffic circle. Thorarensen is depicted dressed in a business suit, gesturing with his hat in his hand. The text on the plaque, in English (and any translation errors are mine alone), is:
"With the spirit of one man, great works are often achieved by the efforts of many."
Egill Gr. Thorarensen
"Guardian in Sigtún, sharp-eyed, strong-willed, and generous in spirit."
Egill (1897-1961) was a merchant in Sigrún's time in Selfoss from 1918-1930.
He managed the Cooperative Society of Arnesinga from 1930, took over the chairmanship of the Dairy of Flóamenn a year later, and held both positions until his death.
He was undoubtedly the foremost businessman of the people of South Iceland for decades and paved the way for Selfoss as the capital of the South and Þorlákshöfn as a port.
"Hard to see under the brow, but upon closer inspection,
a smile beneath the surface and a glimmer of kindness in the eyes."
