The statue of Christ the Redeemer is the largest Art Deco sculpture in the world. It can be seen everywhere in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
We can access the statue by train, van or car. We arrived by train and chose the elevator to access the statue rather than the 220-step staircase.
Constructed between 1922 and 1931, the statue is 30 metres (98 ft) high, excluding its 8-metre (26 ft) pedestal. The arms stretch 28 metres (92 ft) wide.
Maintenance work needs to be conducted periodically because of the strong winds and erosion to which the statue is exposed, as well as lightning strikes.
Beneath the statue, a chapel named in honor of Brazil's patroness, Our Lady of the Apparition, was consecrated in 2006. It allows Catholics to celebrate baptisms, weddings and masses.
