Tolson’s Chapel housed the American Union School starting in 1868. It was built by former slaves shortly after the Emancipation. The school operated for 31 years before it closed. The church closed its doors in 1998 after the death of the last member. This building serves as a memorial to the power of freedom as well as a memorial to the lives of the millions of men and women who have and continue to fight to win and preserve our freedom.
