De Kraanbaan stamt uit de jaren veertig van de twintigste eeuw. Het is een beeldbepalend monument in Laren.
Het object is gebouwd in opdracht van de firma Van Dijk Houthandel en Zagerij, die op deze plek gevestigd was. Voor de komst van de Kraanbaan verwerkte men hier boomstammen met de hand en met paard en wagen. De Kraanbaan maakte het werk een stuk efficiënter.
De Kraanbaan is in gebruik geweest tot de sluiting van de houtwerf in 2016.
In 2019-2020 werd de omliggende woonbuurt gebouwd en is de Kraanbaan gerestaureerd.

Hoe werkte de Kraanbaan?
Na aanvoer werden de boomstammen onder de Kraanbaan opgestapeld. Met behulp van de takel werden de stammen op een lorrie voor de zagerij gelegd. Deze reed ze naar de zaagmachine binnen in de zagerij. Dit kon de verticale zaagmachine zijn waarmee de complete stam tot planken van gelijke dikte werd gezaagd, of de horizontale zaag waarmee de stam tot balken van elke willekeurige afmetingen kon worden gezaagd.

Over Van Dijk Houthandel en Zagerij
Lammert van Dijk, afkomstig uit Hoogland, startte de firma Van Dijk Houthandel en Zagerij op deze plek in 1874. In de beginjaren werd veel materiaal geleverd voor de aanleg van de spoorlijn van Amsterdam naar Amersfoort. Het familiebedrijf ontwikkelde zich in de loop der jaren van houthandel tot timmerbedrijf, producent van houtwaren en aannemer. Vanaf 1975 nam werknemer Goos Zwanniken het bedrijf over van de familie. De naam L. van Dijk's Houthandel - Zagerij hield hij in ere. In 2016 sloot het bedrijf definitief.

Een uniek monument
De technische term voor de Kraanbaan is een hangbaan met takel. De basis-constructie bestaat uit een stalen rail tussen houten jukken. Aan de rail hing een elektrische takel warmee de boomstammen werden opgestapeld en verplaatst. Dat een Kraanbaan met deze opbouw is behouden, is uniek in Nederland en zeer waarschinlijk ook wereldwijd. De Kraanbaan is gebouwd door aannemer Van Dort, het ontwerp is van architect A.P van den Brink.
Deze architect is vooral bekend van zijn ontwerpen van woonhuizen in en rond Laren. Voor het ontwerp van de Kraanbaan liet hij zich inspireren door de bedrijfsactiviteiten van Van Dijk.

The Crane Lane dates from the 1940s. It is an iconic monument in Laren.
The object was built by order of the company Van Dijk Houthandel and Zagerij, which was located on this site. Before the arrival of the Crane Line, people processed logs here by hand and by horse and cart. The Crane Line made the work a lot more efficient.
The Crane Line was in use until the lumber yard closed in 2016.
In 2019-2020, the surrounding residential neighborhood was built and the Crane Line was restored.

How did the Crane Line work?
After supply, the logs were stacked under the Craneway. Using the hoist, the logs were placed on a trolley in front of the sawmill. This drove them to the sawing machine inside the sawmill. This could be the vertical saw with which the complete log was sawn into boards of equal thickness, or the horizontal saw with which the log could be sawn into beams of any size.

About Van Dijk Wood Trade and Sawmill
Lammert van Dijk, from Hoogland, started the firm Van Dijk Houthandel en Zagerij on this site in 1874. In the early years, many materials were supplied for the construction of the railroad from Amsterdam to Amersfoort. Over the years, the family business developed from lumberyard to carpenter, wood products manufacturer and contractor. Starting in 1975, employee Goos Zwanniken took over the business from the family. He kept the name L. van Dijk's Wood Trade - Sawmill. In 2016, the company closed for good.

A unique monument
The technical term for the Crane Rail is a suspension rail with hoist. The basic construction consisted of a steel rail between wooden yokes. From the rail hung an electric hoist with which the logs were stacked and moved. That a crane track with this construction is preserved is unique in the Netherlands and probably worldwide. It was built by contractor Van Dort and designed by architect A.P. van den Brink.
This architect is best known for his designs of houses in and around Laren. For the design of the Crane Line he was inspired by the business activities of Van Dijk.
