"The central square of the Constitution of Navia will change forever this year. The City Council plans a work valued at 238,088 euros with which it expects to gain 500 square meters of space to be devoted to leisure. The mayor, Ignacio García Palacios, details that the reform has as its first purpose to waterproof the roof of the market square to prevent dampness and leaks suffered by the stalls. “But it is also about achieving 'livable' spaces in which people can enjoy,” he says.
With the renovation, the floor of the Plaza de la Constitución will also be at the same level throughout its entire surface, something that is not the case at present. Several stairs communicate different and small areas of the same space that make this “little visited and functional”. With the project, the place is adapted in such a way that it will be possible to install on the same level a playground, with climbing frame and slide, and a terrace with at least ten tables that will manage the bar of the market square.
The work will be eligible for “Leader” funds, within the line of non-productive aid to municipalities. According to the project drawn up by the City Council, the lighting fixtures, now in poor condition, will also be changed. Likewise, the waterproofing will allow an optimal evacuation of rainwater, “which guarantees the best maintenance of the roof of the square”.
The project allocates, of the total, 48,736 euros to level the Constitution Square, 38,235 euros to waterproofing, 16,854 euros to the playground and 14,145 euros to lighting, among the most outstanding items. The plan is part of another larger plan launched by the Navia City Council this term to gain more public spaces. In recent years, the sidewalks of the busiest streets of the capital of the council were widened to make them more attractive and pleasant to walk on. Also, the promenade, one of the most visited connections on foot that communicates with the Poza, the pine forest and the beach environment, was improved."
