In Appingedam there are 5 works of art of people kissing. The fifth image of the series is of Cornelis and Stientje Smit.
When the statue was made in 2013, Cornelis and Stientje were 90 and 86 years old.
Cornelis and Stientje used to run a drugstore in the center and are intimately connected to Appingedam.
They kissed each other on the first Queen's Birthday party after the war in 1945 and still do so every day out of respect and love for each other. It was here that they exchanged their first kiss.
They represent the old Appingedam and represent a rich past.
