This bench is at the end of north F Street , what used to be one of the busiest railyards in Colorado. The bench metal with a vinyl coating and mounted in the ground with concrete. There is a plaque in the cent of the bench honoring Joe James "Jimmy" Gonzales.
The plaque reads;
Joe James "Jimmy" Gonzales
January 25, 1939 - August 27, 2012
Jimmy began his railroading career in 1956 in Salida working
for the Denver & Rio Grande Western Railroad (D&RGW)
unloading mail trains. He worked for the D&RGW and
successive companies until shortly before his death in 2012.
Jimmy's career spanned over 55 years.
Jimmy eventually became an engineering consultant,
advising various railroads throughout the U.S., Mexico,
Canada, Israel, Brazil before becoming a fulltime
consultant to the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway in Ohio.
In 2013 the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railway named one of
its rebuilt locomotives in his honor- the W.E. 6863 as the
"J.J. Gonzales."
This bench is dedicated to Jimmy for his contributions to the
D&RGW in Salida, generosity and dedication to the railroad
industry.
