"It was designed in 1944 by the architects Julián Otamendi (author of the España Building in the Plaza de España) and his brother Joaquín (responsible, together with Antonio Palacios, for the Post Office Building in the Plaza de Cibeles). The construction contract was awarded to the Compañía Madrileña Urbanizadora.
The building houses the Lope de Vega Theater and the Emperador Hotel. The building has a first floor called Lope de Vega.
History
Hotel Emperador, in the east corner of the building.
In 1944 the Compañía Urbanizadora Madrileña, after the urban development operations carried out in the Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos, decided to build a large building on the third section of the Gran Vía, after acquiring the site of 5,200 square meters for 115 million pesetas.
The building was constructed in four years: from 1945 to 1949. In 1950 the Hotel Emperador opened. The Lope de Vega Theater was inaugurated on April 16, 1949. It specialized in musical shows. In 1954 a movie screen was installed, becoming Teatro Cinema Lope de Vega, inaugurated on December 12 of the same year."
