Le lavoir à charbon se situe à proximité de l'ancienne exploitation minière de Sainte-Marie, l'une des plus grandes mines à ciel ouvert d'Europe. Environ 3500 mineurs travaillaient sur le bassin minier de Carmaux et 500 000 tonnes de charbon y étaient extraites par an.
Les lavoirs réalisent la préparation mécanique du charbon, c'est-à-dire la transformation du charbon extrait en produits commercialisables répondant aux exigences des clients ou utilisables dans les centrales et chaufferies des houillères.
The coal washhouse is located near the former Sainte-Marie mining operation, one of the largest open-cast mines in Europe. Around 3,500 miners worked in the Carmaux mining basin and 500,000 tonnes of coal were extracted there per year.
The wash houses carry out the mechanical preparation of coal, that is to say the transformation of the extracted coal into marketable products meeting customer requirements or usable in the power plants and boiler rooms of the coal mines.
