The Minister of Culture, Isabel Pires de Lima, visited the site at the invitation of the Gaia City Council and expressed her receptiveness to the signing of a protocol between her Ministry, the Ministry of Defence and the Gaia local authority to "bring this magnificent space to life".
And there is no shortage of ideas for that property (whose first stone was laid in 1538), where the 5th Artillery Regiment is located. For example, the regiment's commander, Colonel Artur Clero, who served as a guide to Isabel Pires de Lima and Luís Filipe Menezes, argued that that space should be open to the public, either with temporary exhibitions or with a permanent exhibition, which "illustrates the history of the military and ecclesiastical presence in the monastery".
The Mayor of Gaia highlighted the "cordial relations" between the Municipality and the Ministry of Defense and underlined the importance of the Serra do Pilar Monastery.
"The municipality lacks spaces where it can display its museum collection. The Ministry of Defence has made strategic choices that point to its maintenance in the monastery. For the part of the property that is not under the guardianship of the Defence, we will study a protocol that will allow us to ensure maintenance, entertainment and opening to the public. What we ask of the Minister of Culture is that the process be carried out quickly", stated the mayor.
The delegation, which had already visited Casa Barbot, purchased about six years ago by the local authority and where the Casa da Cultura will be installed, also visited the Corpus Christis Convent. A visit that served to conclude the need for "urgent intervention".
"The property is at very high risk of irreversible degradation. The intervention to be carried out will have to have a very broad scope and the recovery project could rely on public/private partnerships and apply for community funds", argued Isabel Pires de Lima.
In turn, Luís Filipe Menezes highlighted that the Gaia City Council "does not have the financial capacity or the necessary knowledge to recover the central core of the convent". "
