This sign is located along Benham Interpretive Trail just west of parking lot.
Marker Name: Picnic Area
Marker Text: People have been using this site for about 7,000 years. Ancient tools found locally indicate that Indians hunted, fished and gathered plants in this area well into the 1800’s. In 1916 the Shevlin-Hixon Lumber Company began operations locally. These mature ponderosa pines were left uncut and the site was used for the company’s annual picnic. As many as 2,000 employees and their families were transported from Bend by railroad flat cars. A summer’s day of festivity was provided which included food, games and dancing.
