William T Phillips was born on July 25, 1858 and died on November 10,1889. William was a relatively young man when he died and there is no cause of death on his headstone; so, that leaves the imagination to run free was to what caused this young man's death on the then lonesome Camas prairie. Could he have been a rancher who got thrown from his horse and suffered fatal injuries? Could he have succumbed to pneumonia that winter of 1889? Or, perhaps died in a shootout with rustlers or some other nefarious character?
I have been unable to find any information on William. But, it is kind of strange that he should be buried in such a relatively remote place; the only current house being about a quarter of a mile away. In 1889 there may not have even been a road, as such, running north/south within 43 feet of his gravesite. And, just maybe, there once was a homestead where the field is now just to the east of where he lies. Whatever the case, he or his family must have had some means to afford the type of headstone that marks William's final resting place.
