Long Description:This sign was located at the Phil Brogan Viewpoint on the Trail of the Molten Land. In 2011, to meet current ADA requirements the Trail of the Molten Lands had to be rerouted and signs replaced. New signs were designed which are more colorful but in many cases less informative than they could have been.
Marker Name: Phil Brogan Viewpoint
Marker Text: The High Cascade peaks to the west are all volcanoes that have erupted during the past million years. Bachelor Butte, about 10,000 years old, is the youngest of these. They all rest on a high plateau made up of hundreds of overlapping shield volcanoes. Ice age glaciers have cut deeply into the older volcanoes such as Broken Top and North Sister. Younger volcanoes such as South Sister escaped with fewer scars. Today, remnants of the old glaciers continue to grind away at these peaks.
