YELLOW BANK TRESTLELocated 1/2 mile east is the site of a wooden railroad trestle built for the Nashville & Northwestern Railroad during the Civil War. The 12th and 13th U.S. Colored Infantry constructed the trestle, and 1305 feet of earthworks. They built another trestle two miles east of this location on Hurricane Creek along with a blockhouse to protect the railroad from Confederate raiders.
"Before the Civil War, work was begun on the railroad between Nashville and Memphis. The first stretch was to be built from Nashville to the banks of he Tennessee River and the work was begun from each end. When the war began in 1861 the groups of men working on the railroad were about to meet near what is now McEwen. Early in 1862 union soldiers set up camp a Yellow Bank Trestle, one-fourth mile east of McEwen. They not only guarded the railroad but also completed it so supplies could go through." ~ McEwen History
