Low Wood used to be a highly industrial area, with Low Wood gun powder works upstream, and cotton mills further away. The bridge marks the highest navigable point for sea going craft to tie up and unload. Delivering raw materials and taking away minerals, iron and probably wool.
This used to be the lowest crossing point of the river Leven. There used to be two railway bridge downstream. Only one remains intact but unused, with geocache nearby. There is a footbridge at Greenodd across the Leven estuary.
