These gardens were laid out to commemorate the life of Beryl Burton O.B.E. who was a World Champion Amateur Cyclist who lived in Morley and for most of her career rode for the Morley Cycling Club. During her career she dominated women's cycle racing in the UK, winning more than 90 domestic championships, seven world titles, and setting numerous national records.
The gardens are behind Queen Street the main shopping street of Morley.
This plaque marks the unveiling of the large mural within the gardens.

THE MURAL PROJECT WAS INITIATED BY GROUNDWORK LEEDS AND
SUPPORTED BY LEEDS CITY COUNCIL. MORLEY CYCLING CLUB AND
MANY OTHER KIND DONORS
THE MURAL IS OVER 60' LONG x 17' HIGH AND WAS PAINTED BY
THE TAMMY HALL GROUP OF LOCAL ARTISTS

Charlie Burton was Beryl's husband and Denise Burton-Cole her daughter.
Charlie Burton introduced Beryl to cycling and was her coach and mechanic.
Her daughter, Denise Burton, was also a top cyclist, winning a bronze in the 1975 world individual pursuit championship. Mother and daughter were both selected to represent Great Britain in the 1972 world championship.
