Nejcasteji knihobudky vznikají prestavbou starých a nepoužívaných telefonních budek ci umístením skríne do verejného prostoru.
S nápadem umistovat knihy do verejného prostoru prišel již roku 2009 americký umelec Todd Bol a vytvoril projekt Little Free Library.
Ceský projekt KnihoBudka vznikl v léte 2013 z iniciativy Moniky Serbusové a Pavla Železného.

Book Booth is a non-profit project that consists of building small bookcases in public spaces. Most often, book booths are created by converting old and unused telephone booths or placing a cupboard in a public space.
The idea of ??placing books in public spaces was first proposed by American artist Todd Bol in 2009 and he created the Little Free Library project.
The Czech Book Booth project was created in the summer of 2013 on the initiative of Monika Serbusová and Pavel Železný. The project was funded by the Think Big! program from O2. The original goal was to convert seven old telephone booths into small public libraries. The first Book Booth was officially opened on January 9, 2014 on the premises of the IKEM hospital in Prague.
As of February 2019, the Book Booth project had built about 30 implementations. However, volunteers from other cities also participated in the event independently of the original project, often in cooperation with local libraries. In 2025, there were at least 387 street libraries in the Czech Republic.
Bookboxes are essentially a form of public libraries and are created (not only) by converting old telephone booths into bookcases. They function as public free libraries where people can donate, borrow, exchange or borrow books.
