"The current coat of arms of Castile and León is the same one worn by the sovereign Ferdinand III the Saint, who in 1230 inherited the kingdom of León from his father, with the consequent union of the kingdoms of Castile and León under a single crown.

It should be noted that this coat of arms and its flag were the ones flown by the caravels that discovered the New World, since the men who embarked on that venture came from the Crown of Castile. It is also the one that flew over the ships of Ferdinand Magellan during his First Circumnavigation of the World (1519-1522), and over the ship Victoria, which completed it."
