"The Plaza Mayor, rectangular in shape and largely surrounded by arcades, is Trujillo's most famous spot. It houses the famous equestrian statue of Francisco Pizarro. Originally, this square was occupied by suburban residents, artisans, and merchants. Later, palaces and stately homes were built, making it the central place of city life beginning in the 16th century.

Today, much of the square is home to hospitality businesses such as bars and restaurants. The plaza also houses the tourist information office and other shops catering to tourists."
