"It is located between the palace of Luis de Chaves and the Church of Santiago. It has a semicircular arch, battlements, and is flanked by the two towers of the aforementioned wall, each with loopholes, giving it a distinctly defensive character. The bells in the tower of the Church of Santiago were kept ringing for the curfew, from dusk until dawn the following day, when they were closed and the gates in the wall through which the town was entered were opened.

The inscription is located within the walls above the Puerta de Santiago, also known as the Puerta del Sol, where the roads to Toledo, Oretum (Calatrava), and Córdoba began. It connects the enclosure with the Plaza del Arrabal, which from the 16th century onwards would become the nerve center of the city. Pilgrims walking to Compostela from the south entered through it, and at its edge within the walls is the church of the former parish of Santiago. A stone image of the Saint was carved in the niche of the arch on the outside, next to the to the Altamirano family's coat of arms.

This gate was repaired when King Alfonso XI arrived in Trujillo from Seville with Juan Alfonso de la Casa, to whom he granted the lordship of Old Orellana.
