[EN] “Plaza de Chueca, formerly known as Plaza de San Gregorio Magno, is a small pedestrian plaza in the Justicia neighborhood of Madrid, Centro district, bordered by Gravina Street to the east and Augusto Figueroa Street to the west, at the beginning of Madrid's Gran Vía. Dedicated since 1943 to the Madrid composer Federico Chueca, it gives its name to the entire neighborhood. At the beginning of the 21st century, it appeared in tourist guides as the heart of the gay community in the capital of Spain, although this information was not yet included in the work of some chroniclers, street studies, and encyclopedias about Madrid.

History

It still did not exist in 1861, when the historian and illustrated costumbrista Ramón de Mesonero Romanos published his entertaining and well-documented Historical-Anecdotal Walks through the streets and houses of this town, the subtitle of his work "Old Madrid." In the first half of the 19th century and part of the previous one, the space occupied by the buildings that enclose the square and its surroundings were occupied by La Galera, a women's prison brought to this area from previous sites, and the orchards of the Dukes of Frías. The urban layouts that have been preserved were formed by opening San Gregorio Street to Augusto Figueroa Street (then called Santa María del Arco), and by widening Gravina Street.

Mesonero writes that that old suburb of "the chisperos, a branch of the manolería, manufacturers and merchants of iron utensils; and the humbleness of its houses, almost all of them one story, and the blackened and solitary nature of its twists and turns, made the streets very suitable for the immoral and treacherous scenes that Don Ramón de la Cruz and Don Francisco Gregorio de Salas aspired to poeticize in his farces..." After its modern urbanization, the Plaza de Chueca and its surroundings enjoyed a traditional and relatively peaceful period, even sharing some privileges of a new, residential neighborhood. A century later, the deterioration of the Spanish postwar period and the progressive concentration of drug-related criminal circles in the square from the late 1970s onwards turned the place into the epicenter of another of the many ruined neighborhoods in old Madrid.

The joint action of an intelligent sector of the homosexual community concentrated in the area, with the help of neighbors and some isolated elements of the Scientific Police, recovered and transformed Chueca Square and its surroundings, ultimately turning it into one of the real estate jewels of central Madrid, and a symbolic LGBT heart of Madrid, the center of the multitudinous Gay Pride festival.”
