The Devils Backbone is a ridge in Searcy County, Arkansas and has an elevation of 1,447 feet. Historical Markers at this scenic overlook names this feature, describe its geology, and relates the history of routing Highway 65 through the mountains here. This location, named as the "South Mountain Overlook," is called the "Devils Backbone Overlook" in some sources. The cut exposes the upper Fayettville Shale and lower Pitkin Limestone, which was deposited in a shallow sea that once covered these lands as the Mississippian Geological period ended. The ridge itself can be hiked, with a trailhead at the Devils Backbone Natural Area, west of Marshall.
