"An entrance to the industry of captivity
After having been arrested by the Gestapo, members of the Norwegian resistance movement were brought to this building to be interrogated and sent on to prisons or prison camps in Norway, or to concentration camps in Germany or other European countries.
The house prison
A “house prison” (Hausgefängnis) was installed on the third floor, which by at least 1943 was known as “the Gestapo House”, and a large number of prisoners were kept in the prison cells for extended periods and subjected to severe torture.
The prison cells were installed to facilitate the interrogation process of prisoners normally kept in the district prison, located elsewhere in Bergen city centre. Keeping the prisoners close to the investigators improved efficiency and spared police resources otherwise used for transportation between the district prison and the police headquarters. House prisons of this kind installed by SiPo were seen in cities across Europe where SiPo established offices during the Nazi era. The use of house prisons also made imprisonment harsher and extended the use of torture.
The cells here have been kept intact, with the original inscriptions scratched onto the walls during and after WWII, when Norwegian collaborators and foreign war criminals were kept in the cells awaiting interrogation and subsequent war crime trials."
