"The Statue of Bjornstjerne Bjornson
From 1857 until 1859 another intellectual was appointed as director of the National theatre. Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was his name and here you have his statue, created by the sculptor Gustav Vigeland in 1917.
After you've had a good look, turn so that the theatre is on your left and make your way around it, keeping it on your left as you walk. I'll tell you more about our good friend Bjørnson.
Friend of Ibsen and Edvard Greg, Bjørnson was a novelist, a poet and a playwright. In 1903 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature "as a tribute to his noble, magnificent and versatile poetry, which has always been distinguished by both the freshness of its inspiration and the rare purity of its spirit." He is also celebrated for his lyrics to the Norwegian national anthem "Ja, vi elsker dette landet" which in English means: Yes, we love this country.
Keep following the path in front of the theatre, keeping it on your left."
