This memorial is located on the campus of Laval University (Université Laval) in Quebec City, Quebec, Canada. The plaque is affixed to a stone on a terrace near De la Terrasse St. The text of the plaque reads: "L'Université Laval a eu l'honneur d'accueillir en ces lieux Sa Sainteté le Pape Jean-Paul II à l'occasion d'une célébration eucharistique le 9 Septembre 1984." This translates to English as: "Laval University had the honor of welcoming His Holiness Pope John Paul II to these premises on the occasion of a Eucharistic celebration on September 9, 1984."
The pope, now known as Saint John Paul II, travelled in Canada from September 9-20, 1984, visiting numerous cities across the country. His visit to Laval University was the first Mass he celebrated in Canada. His homily during the Mass focused on the text from Saint Matthew's Gospel, "You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God" (Matt. 16:16). He exhorted Canadians to live out their faith with "a new missionary effort," and not "accept a divorce between faith and culture."
