The history of the lone tree is related on a State Historical Marker a few miles away. Merrick county residents placed this cement tree trunk here in 1911 to mark the actual site of the famous tree. Some nearby painted wooden signs relate Merrick county history.

A moderate sized cottonwood now stands behind the marker. One wonders if it will ever reach the size of its predecessor.
