The bell tower with semicircular arches on all four sides, very simple, houses a single bell.

"The current church dates from the 1960s and follows the designs of Professor RV Galea. It replaced an 18th-century structure destroyed by enemy bombing in 1942. The oldest church on this site was built in 1462 and was dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat. Originally, its façade was on the opposite side, and the resulting building's floor plan was several meters lower.

One of its bells fell into the Victualling Ground after the 1942 bombing. Dating from 1523, the Shipyard Superintendent gave it to Archbishop Mikiel Gonzi in 1944. Eventually, the bell was moved to the then-newly built Parish Church of St. Lucy, but in 1995 it was returned to Birgu and displayed in the Parish Museum."
