"The first church on the site was built in 1624 at the initiative of Canon Giovanni Abela. It had a square floor plan, a ribbed barrel vault, and an altar. The Congregation ultimately rebuilt it over the course of sixty years. The rear part was enlarged with the construction of a choir and transepts between 1737 and 1739, while the remaining section of the 1624 construction was replaced by a side nave with two side altars on either side in 1779. The pipe organ was added in 1784. The church was consecrated by Bishop Vincenzo Labini on September 28, 1786."
