Princes Street Gardens is one of the most iconic and beloved public parks in Edinburgh, Scotland, nestled right in the heart of the city. Divided into East and West Gardens, it stretches along the south side of Princes Street, Edinburgh’s main shopping street, and lies in the natural valley that once separated Edinburgh’s Old Town from the New Town.
The area was once covered by the Nor Loch, a man-made defensive lake After the loch was drained in the late 1700s, the gardens were created around 1820. They were designed to serve the New Town residents and offer scenic contrast to the medieval Old Town
It serves both the local communities and commuters (the area is also a transportation hub) and tourists, attracted by the historical spots nearby.
Generally open daily from early morning to dusk (not gated, but West Gardens may close earlier in winter)
