The anchor serves as a symbol of the maritime history of the city of Loviisa and its connection to the sea.

The coat of arms of Loviisa also features an anchor. The explanation of the coat of arms is "a blue and gold broken shield. On a blue field, two golden cannons crossed and on a golden field, a black anchor."
