About Fumay and slate...
"The municipality covers 3,756 hectares, most of which is woodland. Although the forest dominates the landscape, the town's reputation is mainly due to one of its subsoil resources: slate. Of exceptional quality, it was mined until the early 1970s.
The oldest part of the town grew up in an extremely narrow meander of the Meuse, forming a veritable peninsula, with the most recent districts developing around its edges. Fumay seems to be crowned by its church. It is said that slate mining gradually caused the whole village to sink, but that no one ever dared to dig under the church, which is why it dominates today."
