"The Ribeira Sacra region boasts a high level of biodiversity. The inland areas of the provinces of Lugo and Ourense are influenced by an Atlantic-continental climate. This implies a specific flora such as chestnut trees, oaks, gorse, heather, and broom. However, apart from this Atlantic-continental flora, and due to the prevailing microclimate in the Sil Canyon , one can also find many varieties more typical of a Mediterranean climate, such as cork oaks, strawberry trees, holm oaks, orange and olive trees, rockrose, and lavender. There are also a large number of medicinal and aromatic plants (yarrow, wild oregano, St. John's wort, etc.) and a multitude of wild berries (blackberries, blueberries, rosehips, etc.).
While the flora is exceptionally varied, the fauna is no less so. Wild boar, roe deer, foxes, and rabbits hide in the forests of the Ribeira Sacra. According to a study, there are more than 160 different vertebrates in the Ribeira Sacra . The aquatic fauna of the Sil River includes trout, black bass, carp, and otters. Birds, particularly birds of prey, are also of special interest. The Sil Canyon has a significant colony of black kites, and several species of eagles can be seen in the Ribeira Sacra : the common buzzard, the osprey, and the golden eagle. During the cold season, herons and ducks come to spend the winter in the Sil Canyons ."
