The Yukon Theatre, a fixture in downtown Whitehorse since opening its doors on December 3, 1954 with The Glenn Miller Story, has been a gathering place for generations. Built in a time when the city was still growing into its post-war identity, the single-screen cinema offered Yukoners a window to the wider world through newsreels, Hollywood features, and Canadian productions.

In 1980, Landmark Cinemas took over operations, and by 1987 the building had been converted into a twin theatre to meet changing audience demands. Despite these updates, the venue retained its distinctive mid-century charm, from its neon signage to its central location on Wood Street.

Landmark closed the cinema in September 2021, a move that could have left Whitehorse without a dedicated movie house. Instead, the Yukon Film Society stepped in, reopening it that December and beginning the work of restoring both its physical condition and its role in the community.

Renovations have included cleaning, repairs, and the celebrated restoration of its neon signs. Looking ahead, plans call for returning it to a single-screen format with a stage for live performances, ensuring the Yukon Theatre remains both a cultural anchor and a beacon of light in the city for years to come.
