These 5-inch breech loaded field guns were developed in the early years of the 20th century and saw extensive use by the British during World War I on all fronts. Over 1700 were manufactured and they were still being used at the outbreak of World War II. This one was manufactured in 1918 by Elswick Ordnance Company, the armaments branch of the W.G. Armstrong & Company.
I don’t know how this one ended up in the middle of North America but I do know that many were brought to the U.S. after the war for evaluation and I’m sure some of those wound up as memorials. This 60-pounder sits in static display in Thorsnes Park in the small town of Lake Preston in South Dakota.
