In the self proclaimed "Butterfly Town U.S.A", the small town of Pacific Grove, California plays host to thousands, maybe millions of Monarch Butterflies. This sculpture is located at Lover's Point Park and is one of my favorites.

Monarch Butterflies are truly amazing and mysterious creatures. They have a migration path that stretches from their breeding grounds in Canada, all the way down to Mexico. Pacific Grove, California is one of the consistent over wintering spots along the migration path for these beautiful insects. The city of Pacific Grove is so enamoured with these delicate creatures that they have dedicated a Butterfly Sanctuary, post Butterfly Crossing signs, and even host a Butterfly Parade each year (bet you can't guess what the favorite apparel to wear for the parade is: butterfly wings).
This sculpture was commisioned by Hilda Van Sicklen and sculpted by Gordon Newell. It's a wonderful piece of art, carved out of black granite. The rest of the park is wonderful too. It's one of several popular scuba diving spots, has panoramic views of the Monterey Bay (when it's not foggy), and is the beginning of the 22 mile bike path that extends North to Marina.
