The 47-story Penobscot Building, designed by Wirt C. Rowland, towers 566 feet over Detroit's skyline. When the building was completed in 1928, it was the world's eighth tallest building and the tallest building outside of New York and Chicago. It remained the tallest building in Detroit's skyline for nearly 50 years until the Renaissance Center was completed in 1977. The Penobscot shares many Art Deco features common to structures built in the 1920's including its "H" shape and the sculptural setbacks that cause the upper floors to progressively "erode". Today, the third tallest building in Detroit, the Penobscot continues to provide valuable office space in the heart of the city's financial district.
