Each year, there is an updated “salute” to the Senior Class of the High School across the street. But it is not the students who paint the numbers on the tank.

Almost immediately after construction of this tank in the 1960’s, it became a tradition for members of the rising Senior Class at the high school to climb the tank in the middle of the night and paint their “year” on the side.
For years, the Town of Cary tolerated this practice. Eventually, however, concerns over liability and safety were raised...especially after the tank became a host to numerous cellular telephone antennas, with the associated “clutter” along the elevated walkway, and high levels of RF radiation.
So each year, Town officials and High School administrators ordered the students to stay off the tower. And every year, like clockwork, the numbers were changed by “stealth” painters. It was amusing to drive past the high school on a Summer morning and see that the number had been revised sometime during the previous night.
To keep kids off the tank, the Town took the unusual step of hiring a professional tower painting company to revise the number. It does this every year. That’s why the lettering looks so good! New residents to the area often are surprised to hear that the Town has a budget for this item. Some people think the Town of Cary is so “exclusive” that it paints the numbers on the tank for its students. But now you know the REST of the story. And, if it saves a life, it is worth every penny.
