The Fort Jefferson Lighthouse is a 37 foot iron tower, which sits atop a 50 foot parapet within historic Fort Jefferson for a total height of 87 feet. Fort Jefferson's construction began in 1846, and the present lighthouse was erected in 1876. The lightstation was automated in 1912 and was decommissioned in 1924. The area was designated a National Park in 1992. Take a day trip from Key West and enjoy the fort, snorkeling and a great visit to the lighthouse.
