Chief John Ross led the last detachment of Cherokees on the Trail of Tears following the water route where his wife "Quatie," aka Elizabeth Ross, died. She died aboard the steamboat Victoria shortly before reaching Little Rock.

The gravestone was erected in the Mt. Holly cemetary many years later as a memorial.
