A Union soldier stands on top of a square granite pedestal, which is located just inside the Main Street entrace to Forest Lawn Cemetery. Several inscriptions are on the base of the pedestal and are as follows:
Front: "This monument honors the soldiers and sailors buried here, who fought to save the Union, 1861-1865."
Right Side: "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty. One country one flag."
Left Side: "The penalty of treason is death. No North no South. The Union is forever."
Back: "By the Erie County Burial Association, of the 'Grand Army of the Republic'"
Alongside and behind the monument are four cannons with a small pile of cannonballs in front. Surrounding the monument are the gravesites of many many Civil War veterans.
