The Great Eastern Divide is formed by the Alleghany Mountain. Water to the east flows into the Altlantic Ocean by way of the Jackson and James Rivers, while water to the west flow to th Gulf of Mexico by way of Greenbrier, New, Kanawha, Ohio and Mississippi Rivers.
The text of the historic marker reads:
GREAT EASTERN DIVIDE
"At this point atop the Alleghenies is the geographical feature known as the Great Eastern Divide, a natural barrier from which water flows to the Atlantic Ocean by way of the Jackson and James rivers and to the Gulf of Mexico via the Greenbrier, New, Kanawha, Ohio and Miss. rivers. As part of the Proclamation Line of 1763, it temporarily served to stop further western colonial expansion."
