Old St. Joseph cemetery. The Catholic community in the Dexter area began in 1836. Soon after, this property was used as a cemetery, with the first known burial occurring in 1839. In 1840, a church was built on this site and dedicated to St. Joseph. A fire destroyed this building 1856, and a new one was built in the Village of Dexter. When a new cemetery was consecrated on Baker Road in 1870, this site fell into disuse. The Last burial occurred in 1910.
Time, neglect and vandalism took its toll until 1980, when the parishioners reclaimed and restored this sacred place. Unable to locate the original gravesites, the monuments were gathered into the present arrangement to preserve them and to honor the memory of our ancestors.
There are approximately 150 headstones gathered together.
