The Greater Penobscot Building, Griswold and Fort Sts., Detroit's Tallest skyscraper, is a 47-story limestone structure with a base of polished gray granite. It was designed by Smith, Hinchman, and Grylls of Detroit, and completed in 1928. The simple shaft of the building is broken above the thirteenth story by a series of setbacks. The entrance doors are trimmed with mahogany-colored polished granite carved in low relief; friezes and carvings adorn the walls and pillars of the lobby. The Penobscot Observation tower (open 9-5 daily during fair weather; admission $0.25; telescope furnished) affords an excellent view of the city. Rising 100 feet from the roof is a steel structure capped with an aviation beacon, laced with glowing neon tubes.
--excerpt from Michigan: A Guide to the Wolverine State, 1941.
Today, the Penobscot continues to provide valuable office space in the heart of the city's financial district. However, it can no longer claim to be the tallest building in Detroit's skyline and the observation deck is no longer open to the public.
