Records indicate that within this proximity the first Catholic Church and Cemetery was built for the small village of Petites Cotes,  then under Spanish rule.  The church was named Saint Charles Borromeo and dedicated on November 7, 1791 by Lt. Governor Manuel Perez  Its architecture was referred to as the Creole Mississippi Valley style "poteaux  em terre," meaning spright timbers.  The log church was replaced by a more stable church of stone in 1828. ~ text of marker

Slightly uphill from this marker a replica church building is being built using vertical logs place in the ground.  The replica was begun in 2005 and work slowly continues on it.
