Actually, the park is located at the base of the falls, since the falls have been around longer. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) had added a great interpretive sign here that tells of picnics at the falls as far back as 1879, when this region was known for its a great for the iron ore deposits. The walkway, built in 2004, takes you most of the way you up the falls, up to the property line owned by MDOT. Don't fail to notice the conveniently placed poison ivy that encourages you to keep on the walkway and off the fragile slopes.
